TV Land recently ordered "American Woman" to air soon. The series is set in the 1970s and stars Alicia Silverstone.
Deadline reported that TV Land confirmed that it approved 12 episodes of "American Woman," a half-hour dramedy, starring the "Clueless" actress. Silverstone will play Bonnie, an unconventional mother who struggles to raise her two daughters after she left her husband.
Bonnie also gets support from her two best friends, Kathleen (Mena Suvari) and Diana (Jennifer Bartels), and the three will realize their own type of independence in an unforgiving world. Makenna James and Lia Ryan McHugh will play Bonnie's two daughters. "American Woman" is set in the midst of the sexual revolution and the growth of second-wave feminism.
Alicia Silverstone Breaks Into Live-Action TV In "American Woman"
Silverstone signed on for "American Woman" earlier in 2016 when the project was still in its pilot stage. It may mark the actress's huge break into live-action TV as a leading lady.
In the past several years, Silverstone has been doing guest appearances and voice work, but "American Woman" will be the first time that she will be fully featured on television. "American Woman" is inspired by the real-life experience of Kyle Richards of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."
John Riggi will head "American Woman" and serve as executive producer with John Wells. Richards will also serve as co-executive producer on the series. Alex Hardcastle directed and executive produced the pilot. John Wells Productions and Warner Horizon Television created "American Woman."
"American Woman" Joins Newly Approved Reboots Of "First Wives Club" & "Heathers"
Keith Cox, President of Development and Original Programming for TV Land, said that they feel very lucky to work with Riggi and Wells on "American Woman." He described the upcoming series as beautifully written and directed, with a stellar cast that features the 70s themes that are still relevant at present.
Variety wrote that "American" Woman is the newest scripted series picked up at TV Land. The show will be joining the recently approved reboots of "Heathers" and "First Wives Club."
The premiere date of "American Woman" has yet to be announced, although it is expected to launch sometime in 2017. More updates and details on the dramedy are expected soon.
