Back in 2004, Universal Pictures debuted "Van Helsing," a film based on the vigilante hunter from Bram Stoker's "Dracula." The film starred Hugh Jackman as the titular character, alongside Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerius. The Stephen Sommers-directed film earned modestly well at the box office, and many fans have wondered if there would be a "Van Helsing" Reboot or sequel in the works.
The answer is yes, a "Van Helsing" Reboot is set to be created by Jon Spaihts and Eric Heisserer. Spaihts has earned recognition most recently thanks to Marvel's "Doctor Strange," as well as his upcoming Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence starrer, "Passengers." Spaihts shared to Collider that the "Van Helsing" Reboot will see a "new incarnation" and a "romantic departure" from the 2004 flick.
According to Spaihts, the new "Van Helsing" Reboot will feature a character that differs greatly from what viewers got to know 12 years ago. He promised that it would be a "romantic departure" from the Abraham Van Helsing that viewers were introduced to through Stoker's "Dracula." He called the "new incarnation" a character that should be someone to look forward to as well.
According to GameSpot, the upcoming "Van Helsing" Reboot will be set in present day and will open up the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe, which also encompasses the upcoming "The Mummy." As the character is, in fact, a monster hunter much like Sam and Dean in "Supernatural," it would definitely be interesting to know how the "new incarnation" will figure into the shared universe of "The Mummy." It would also be interesting to find out what role he will play in hunting down these monsters.
It's also exciting to know that Heisserer has found inspiration for the character in Mad Max. The "Van Helsing" Reboot has no release date attached to it at the moment, so take a look back at the 2004 film starring Jackman with the trailer below.
