Valve announced via official blog post the dates for both the upcoming Spring Major and The International 2017. Aside from that, it reveals an update to the qualifier format for the Spring Major.
The Spring Major is expected to happen on April 20-23, with qualifiers from March 6-13. Valve wants to avoid conflict with third-party tournaments, according to ESPN. This is why the qualifier format format for the Spring was changed.
In the new qualifier format, Spring Major will be changed in order to accommodate more diverse regions. So in America, it will be split into two regions: North America and South America; Europe will into two as well: Europe and CIS. The only thing that did not change is the number of invites per region that has been announced.
The International will come in the first half of August, with qualifiers taking place on June 22-29, 2017. The first major of the season is The Boston Major, which will be held on Dec. 3.
Aside from that, the company wants to avoid "World Series Problem," Red Bull reported. Speaking of Boston Major, there will be no Lower Brackets and no second chance in this tournament. So what does it mean? Once a team loses their first best-of-three, they will automatically go home.
As mentioned earlier, Valve wants to avoid "the World Series problem," it has made some changes in the rules. With new rules and changes, expect single-elimination, which will cause fewer matches. If there are fewer matches, there will be more viewers who can't afford to watch the matches for the whole week, can follow the event.
