Facebook's Chat Heads, recently released for iOS, has limited functionality and is stuck inside the Facebook app unlike on Android where it is much more visible. However, a developer has created a tweak for jailbroken iPhones that allows Chat Heads run "on top" of the iOS just as they do on Android.
The tweak, created by 21-year-old computer science major Adam Bell, lets the Chat Heads feature in the iOS Facebook app appear across all apps. "I just got jealous," Bell says to The Verge. "I wanted them on iOS." It took Bell a few hours to create a working version of the hack.
Elaborating on the functionality of the Facebook Home style tweak, Bell says, "The hardest part was getting this all to render on top of everything else. It doesn't seem very resource intensive. Only when you move the Chat Head is it actually doing anything."
Chat Heads, a part of the Facebook Home environment, was released for Android last week. The feature pops up on Facebook Home-enabled phones as notifications for Facebook messages or SMSes. Users can tap on them to directly access the message, drag them around to rearrange them, or dismiss them.
The iOS 6 jailbreak tweak is yet to arrive in Cydia, Bell plans to release the app for free soon.
