Xiaomi recently announced a new device without the traditional bezel at the top typically used to display a front-facing camera and a receiver. The handset, known as the Xiaomi Mi Mix, features an edgeless display. The smartphone reportedly uses ultrasound in place of a receiver and an upside down trick to open the selfie cam.
While rumors have been circulating that the upcoming iPhone may roll out with a reduced bezel at the top and the bottom, Xiaomi rolled out an edge-to-edge phone. Apple is expected to bring something bigger to the table with its 10 year anniversary iPhone., Popsci reported. On the other hand, the Chinese phone manufacturer went ahead in innovation that completely discarded the bezel altogether.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix has a 6.4 inch display that includes a built-in front-facing camera by turning the phone upside-down. The Mix also includes a piezoelectric speaker that emit sound via the phone's metal frame. Furthermore, the handset is able to detect when the face is pressed up against the phone to receive a call.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix is also equipped with 4GB of RAM, 128GB internal storage, Snapdragon 821 chip and a 4,400mAh battery. Moreover, a 6GB RAM handset with 256GB internal storage is also available. The 4GB variant costs $516 USD while the more capable version sells at $590 USD.
Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Mi Mix allegedly will not be rolling out in the UK. Apparently, the Chinese company is said to focus its efforts on the domestic market. Sales for the handsets are slated to begin on Nov. 4. Furthermore, Xiaomi India product head Jai Mani recently confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi Mix would not go on sale outside of China, a Reddit thread revealed.
Xiaomi Global VP Hugo Barra also revealed that speed and reliable internet while traveling had also been a key motivation by the company. Furthermore, the device is also said to feature a 5MP camera at the bottom of the front panel. The feature is aimed at taking up less space via a custom camera sensor 50 percent smaller than the average. Watch the Xiaomi mix Hands-on Review
