"Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 has been in the rumor mill for quite some time now. Confirmation of the new season has been reported since last year but fans are still waiting for its release. Animation studio Pierrot hasn't announced anything official yet but according to reports, the animated series should be out before this year ends.
Last year, a report from Anime Maru mentioned that "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 is already geared for a winter 2016 release. Moreover, it was stated that Pierrot won't be involved in the new season as Madhouse has taken over. Titled, "Tokyo Ghoul √(-1)," the series will reportedly focus on Touka Kirishima as the character goes through the journey of finding the right college to attend to. One of the anime writers, referred to only as Bob, allegedly revealed that the third series focusing on Touka will be the "most disillusioning, psychological and darkest plot line" ever made.
While it would be exciting to finally have "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3, some fans think that the report was false because they believe that Touka shouldn't be the focus of the series - especially not her college journey. Fans insist that "Tokyo Ghoul's" new season should put the spotlight on Kaneki's transformation. In addition, people took the "Tokyo Ghoul √(-1)" title as a hint that the report was fake since √(-1) equates to "i," which could stand for imaginary.
Some hardcore fans believe that "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 is not happening despite the report from Anime Maru. Whether or not the series is arriving in winter 2016 remains to be seen but a report from Anime News Network agrees on the 2016 release window. FUNimation Entertainment CEO and President Gen Fukunaga confirmed that season 3 will be out in 2016, the report said.
The announcement was made by game publisher GameSamba, while confirming the release of "Tokyo Ghoul" mobile game for this year. FUNimation did confirm to Anime News Network that a 2016 release is happening, but it wasn't made clear if it was referring to the mobile game app or the animated series. Since nothing has been confirmed about "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 for now, fans should just continue to wait for more updates.
