Fans of "Shadowhunters" Season 2 are eager to find out what's next for Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) and Alec (Matthew Daddario) after sharing a kiss in the Freeform show. While it may take quite a while before the duo makes a dynamic return on the small screen, Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer - the new showrunners - promise fans that the waiting game will not be in vain.
Slavkin previously stated in an Empire magazine interview that the Malec storyline made such an impression in "Shadowhunters" Season 1. With that, the pair's story will be further developed in the upcoming "Shadowhunters" Season 2.
Numerous upgrades should also be expected; with Slavkin stating that the seraph blades will be replaced with swords adorned with glowing runes. Fighting scenes are "more powerful and more visceral", as hinted by Slavkin, adding that they have incorporated more wire work for "Shadowhunters" Season 2. The vamp seed, portal, and the cat eyes will also be more aesthetic in order to create mind-blowing visual effects, as promised by the showrunners.
Meanwhile, Michael Reisz, the show's producer, said that although "Shadowhunters" Season 2 will highlight Magnus and Alec's relationship, it will also touch their individual growth in an interview with Paste. The characters will remain true to their natures, as depicted on the "Mortal Instruments" novels, authored by Cassandra Clare.
While the novels, which are the basis for the show, feature a rather coming-of-age theme, the showrunners will depict a more mature approach in "Shadowhunters" Season 2. The "young" impression that Season 1 gave off will evolve into something that adults will be able to relate into. Apart from Malec, other lead cast members of the show will also be emphasized and given more screen time.
Besides Daddario and Shum, expect to see the return of Dominic Sherwood, Katherine McNamara, Alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia, among many others. The "Shadowhunters" Season 2 will be aired on January 2, 2017.
