'God of War: Ascension' Designer Says There's Plenty of Material For More Games

After four "God of War" games—six if you include the two PSP spin-offs—you'd think the epic of Kratos would have run out of steam. How many games will it take before Kratos has killed every single character in the pantheon of Greek mythology?

"God of War: Ascension" lead designer Mark Simon says that, should Sony decide to make more "God of War" sequels, they won't have to worry about running out of gods and monsters to throw in Kratos' way. Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Simon says the "GoW" team at developer Sony Santa Monica has only been picking at different areas of Greek Mythology:

"Every game is a challenge, but the Greek mythos is so wide and varied," says Simon. "We could never do every myth that it has for us. We don't find it limiting; it's more exciting to explore more areas of it - new gods, new titans, new locales."

Whether Kratos can support another string of games is an entirely different story. "Ascension" is a prequel to the original "God of War," and there's only so many adventures Sony Santa Monica can fit into the series' defined timeline. Critics reviewing "God of War: Ascension" have also suggested that Kratos' limited emotional range are starting to feel a little played out.

While Simon's thoughts don't exactly confirm that "God of War" will make a second generational leap from PS3 to PS4, it certainly sounds like Sony hasn't closed the door on the series yet.

"God of War: Ascension" sees Kratos return to PS3 March 12.
