Harrison Ford was injured while filming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which resulted to the fining of British film company, Foodles Production. The court was previously told that Ford could have been killed during the incident in London.
The Guardian reported that on the set of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in 2014, Harrison Ford was reprising his role as Han Solo when he was crushed by a heavy hydraulic door of the Millennium Falcon at Pinewood Studios in London. The door was reportedly described as a blunt guillotine coming down as the "Star Wars" actor passed beneath it. The door came as close to a number of millimeters from his face before finally pinning him by the pelvis. The "Star Wars" star sustained severe injuries, including a broken left leg, and was relieved that he survived the ordeal.
According to BBC, Foodles Production, a British company owned by Disney, was fined £1.6 million ($2 million) on Oct. 12, 2016 for breaching health and safety practices. The company previously pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching its health and safety obligations. According to Judge Francis Sheridan, the production firm failed to effectively communicate with the "Star Wars" actor. Despite having a risk assessment while filming the "Star Wars" movie, Foodles did not inform Ford. They could have alerted him about the dangers to avoid.
The hydraulic door on the "Star Wars" set was supposed to be closed by a special effects operator from a distance, upon a signal from a spotter. Ford went through the door previously and thought that the set was not live because the door did not shut in past rehearsals. Staff failed to react immediately to keep the door from falling down upon the "Star Wars" actor. It was only 90% shut, but did not yield enough clearance for Ford to pass through.
Ford underwent surgery to have his fractured tibia and fibula bones in his left leg screwed together. He also had to undergo plastic surgery for a deep laceration in his left hand, which was sustained from the same incident. The "Star Wars" actor managed to recover from his injuries to finish his role and successfully launch "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
