Planetside 2 may be coming to the PS4, based on a recent tweet by Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley.
"we [sic] are VERY excited about the PlayStation 4. Read into that what you will [sic] :)"
Smedley's tweet comes the day after Sony officially unveiled the PS4 at a New York press conference last night. Sony Online Entertainment was among the many developers Sony listed as working on projects for the PS4, though there was no mention of what game or games the studio was developing for the platform.
Released in November, Planetside 2's free-to-play model and massive battles have generally been an experience reserved for PC gamers. Though it won't be the first free-to-play game released on consoles, the decision could be an indication that more console games and developers could switch to a microtransaction-based business model on the next generation's dedicated gaming platforms.
Crysis 3 developer Crytek CEO Cerat Yerli recently said the publisher is working to start making only free-to-play games, and will be completely finished with the standard retail model within two to five years.
