With the impending end of the long-running TV series "Vampire Diaries," anticipation for a potential Delena reunion has been high. Recently, cast member Ian Somerhalder shared his thoughts on the speculated return of his former co-star Nina Dobrev to close off the series.
Many Delena fans have been clamoring for Dobrev's return to "Vampire Diaries" Season 8 for its upcoming series finale. The actress left the show in 2015 but promised showrunners that she would be open to reprising her role as Elena in the final episode of the show. However, her participation in the show's upcoming finale has yet to be confirmed.
Viewers have been hoping for a romantic reunion between Dobrev's Elena and Somerhalder's Damon. The two characters were deeply in love with each other prior to Elena's sleep-like death. However, the actor appears to have a different scenario in mind for the speculated Delena reunion.
In an interview with TVLine, Somerhalder indicated that he would rather have Damon live his life without Elena. The said character has had to deal with a lot of changes in her life given her connection with the Salvatore brothers. Elena lost her home, her loved ones and her vibrant life since she met Damon and his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley).
Given the things that Elena had to give up, Damon does not deserve to be happy with her, according to Somerhalder. He also joked of the "super inappropriate" relationship between the two characters given their huge age gap. The 18-year old Elena can be considered a baby compared to Damon, a vampire who is more than a hundred years old.
Meanwhile, series creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec have already finalized the ending plot for the "Vampire Diaries." In an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly, Plec teased of the long process that they went through to arrive at a final decision for the show's storyline. However, the showrunner did not share any details about the upcoming series finale.
"Vampire Diaries" Season 8 is set to premiere on Oct. 21 on The CW.
