Star Trek "Making the Game" Footage Shows Off Co-Op Play [VIDEO]

But the new game looks like it will be worlds away from these simple styles. Described as "bro-op," this new game features co-op gameplay between Captain Kirk and First Mate Spock.

Despite being out in the open for quite some time, Namco Bandai has been fairly hush-hush about Star Trek, a third-person shooter based J.J. Abrams recent franchise overhaul.  While past Trek games have focused on starship combat or strategy, the new game's blockbuster action is a reflection of the films that inspired it.

Set to bridge the gap between J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot and the upcoming sequel, Star Trek: Into Darkness, players controlling Kirk and Spock will seperate skill sets, and will need to work together to make it through: Kirk maintains a kind of "shoot first, ask questions later" attitude, while Spock will "logically" take more of a stealth approach, disabling foes with a quick Vulcan nerve pinch.

Of course, it's not all shooting, either. The video confirms that players will "sit in the captain's chair and give orders" to the crew, implying some type of exploration or ship-to-ship combat. After footage of the game was shown at E3, Paramount VP Brian Miller said the game will look to everything Star Trek fans love together: "You will have elements of a shooter. You'll have elements of exploration, and adventure, and discovery. That is what the new Star Trek is about."

Then again, it is still a co-op centric cover-based shooter so temper your expectations accordingly.

Expect more sneak peeks behind the scenes before Star Trek: the Video Game arrives on April 23rd.
