Knights of the Old Republic II developer Obsidian wants to make another Star Wars RPG, and they're planning on convincing Disney to help them do it.
Speaking with Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Obsidian chief Feargus Urquhart revealed that they're pitching a new RPG set in the time between Star Wars: Episode 3 and Episode 4. The game's story would feature story elements connected to the larger happenings in that the between the two Star Wars trilogies: The fall of the Republic, the systematic extermination of the Jedi, and Obi-Wan Kenobi's search for Luke Skywalker.
Urquhart explained that Obidian had actually pitched the game to Lucasarts, who responded well to the idea, but did not have time to finalize a deal before the company was purchased by Disney, scrambling everything. Urquhart says the studio is "waiting for the smoke to clear" before re-pitching the idea to Disney. "It's something we're still hoping for, even with the Disney/Lucas stuff going on," he said. "It changes things a lot, but you know, we're gonna push on it. I would say it's within the top three pitches we've ever come up with."
As RPS points out, a quality idea from Obsidian may not be enough to get Disney interested. Disney has said that they plan to push the Star Wars franchise towards mobile and social games. In light of the serious collapse of Bioware's The Old Republic MMO, making a AAA Star Wars game may not seem like the best way for Disney capitalize on their investment. Disney has not announced plans to bring Star Wars characters to their game/toy platform, Disney Infinity, but you can bet that they're talking about it.
