Xbox chief Mike Ybarra recently talked about Microsoft's plans for the Project Scorpio gaming console. The platform is set to launch in 2017 and Ybarra emphasized that Project Scorpio will not have any exclusive games. This means that current Xbox One games can still be played in the next-generation console.
In an interview with Windows Central, Ybarra stated that there will not be any Project Scorpio-exclusive titles. However, certain games that rely on virtual reality peripherals will necessarily run only on the console. He said that Project Scorpio will be 100% compatible with all Xbox One games and there will be no exclusive games pending any potential unique accessories like VR.
Ybarra also explained how he believes that simultaneously supporting consoles using different specs will not be a huge issue. He noted that Project Scorpio developers and others are already used to releasing games for systems with varying components. Ybarra said that experienced developers already know the development process of targeting several performance configurations. The approach is currently being used to feature content at 4K resolution or higher to take advantage of powerful PCs, at the same time scaling the content to match systems with different specs accordingly.
The simultaneous support allows developers to easily target multiple performance profiles without significantly upping their content production costs. They expect developers to the same with Project Scorpio and Xbox One games. Ybarra said that their objective is to make it as convenient for developers as possible to target multiple devices. Xbox head Phil Spencer said that the Project Scorpio library is already developing quite well.
NZ Gamer reported that Phil Spencer also said that physical disk drives and pricing were important in the creation of Project Scorpio. He said that the console may have a 4K physical disk drive, considering how some countries still have slow internet speed. Project Scorpio is described by Microsoft as its most powerful console ever. The console is set to launch in holiday 2017. The price of Project Scorpio has not yet been revealed, but Microsoft hinted that it will not be cheap. More updates and details are expected soon.
