The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt will be the last entry in The Witcher series, according to a press release from developer CD Projekt RED. Revealed yesterday in the March 2013 issue of Game Informer, The Witcher 3 will close out the story of monster hunter Geralt of Rivia when it ships in 2014.
According to CD Projekt RED chief Adam Badowski, the studio is apparently adamant about bringing the series to a close with the next entry in the series. "...We believe that we should end the series on a high note," said Badowski. "Technology has progressed to where we can finally tell the story the way we want, with the visuals we want, in the world we imagined."
Not wanting to spoil the surprise, the release didn't elaborate on what fans might expect from the upcoming game beyond a return to series hallmarks like dark and mature themes, a branching narrative, and open-world gameplay. The developer was keen to boast about the size of the world, which will be "30 times larger" than The Witcher 2. "Imagine playing a dark fantasy game with the same great nonlinear story as in the previous Witcher titles, but now told in a world you can explore freely with no artificial boundaries," said CD Projekt RED chief Adam Badowski. Badowski went on to explain that there will be areas of the game will be unaccessible without transportation like horses or ships.
CD Projekt RED is already working on the series that will come after the studio closes the door on The Witcher. Cyberpunk 2077 won't be ready for release until after The Witcher 3 hits stores.
