A new trailer for Injustice: Gods Among us is giving players a glimpse at the game's story, which sees Superman reign in as a dictatorial figure after a horrific attack hits Metropolis, courtesy of the Joker. Superman's new role doesn't seem to sit well with the remaining members of the Justice League, as well as their enemies, forcing a team up between the two traditionally opposed groups to take Supes down. The trailer also gives gamers their first, albeit short peek, at the veritable Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker in action, and Deathstroke sans mask. Check it out below!
Comic fans will see a similarity between the game's storyline and past comic arcs. There's a little bit of a "Red Son" theme, and some Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns" thrown in for good measure, as Batman seems to lead the charge against Superman's tyranny, as the rest of the leaguers follow suit.
It looks as though NeatherRealms Studio head Ed Boon wasn't lying when he told fans over the summer that "Our Superman isn't quite the same Superman that you grew up with. We definitely want to give a more contemporary, NetherRealms spin to the character, and he plays a big part in the story."
A digital comic is also helping to flesh out the story of the game, and will be released as an entire graphic novel once all issues are available.
We've already seen longtime DC characters Lex Luthor, Bane, Deathstroke, Batman, Superman, the Flash, Cyborg, Nightwing, Wonder Woman, the Joker, Green Arrow, Green Lanten, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Solomon Grundy, but there's still more on the way.
According to the game's presentation at this year's EVO, there will be at least 24 playable characters and 15 arenas. Boon does plan on introducing a few characters you might not expect. "With Mortal Kombat, we brought in crazy guests like Freddy Krueger. So we'll definitely want to introduce unexpected characters [via DLC] to Injustice. That'll be our strategy. It's comparable to Mortal Kombat, but being really aggressive with our DLC characters."
Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to release this April for PlayStation 3, Wii U and Xbox 360.
