When it comes to worldwide numbers, the Xbox 360 is well far behind the Nintendo Wii, but in the UK, a different story is being painted now. The Xbox 360 is actually closing in on the Wii, and could possibly take the top spot before the end of 2013.
At the end of December 2012, the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console was less than 200,000 units behind the Wii. This is mainly due to the Christmas shopping which saw the Xbox 360 selling four times more units than the Wii, which is not surprising considering the Wii doesn't have much going on for it, a trend that has been going on for years.
The Xbox 360 is expected to overtake the Wii in both the UK and the U.S., though the Microsoft-branded console has a lot more ground to cover in the U.S. Right now the top consoles in the UK is the Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation 2, followed by the Wii and Xbox 360 in third and fourth respectively
A DFC researcher had this to say:
"The success of Microsoft and the Xbox 360 during the past two years highlights a radical changing of the guard in the game industry.
"Much has been made about a steady video game sales decline in the past three years. In reality the decline has mainly been due to the aging console systems and more importantly because of Nintendo's collapse."
Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console is aging very well. It is the only console to be experiencing relatively good sales despite the decline the game industry has been experiencing due to lack of new consoles.
