French video game developer Quantic Dream has registered the domain name for its next project SingularityPS4.com.
The domain was spotted by video game website Kotaku and later reported on by IGN, which notes that in the past the developer has used a similar style of domain names for its video games including HeavyRain PS3.com and BeyondPS3.com. The title of the domain could be an indictor that the studio is working on a new game called singularity for Sony's PlayStation 4.
There have been many rumors suggesting that Sony could go with the name Orbis for its next generation video game console, but this tidbit of news indicates that Sony will continue to use the PlayStation brand name.
According to a Eurogamer article Quantic Dream studio head David Cage had previously stated that the developer's Project Kara game engine demo was inspired by writer Ray Kurzweil's novel, "The Singularity is Near." This could just be a coincidence, but seems like it is more.
The game from the studio is the upcoming psychological and spiritual thriller, Beyond: Two Souls. "Juno" actress Ellen Page will portray the main protagonist Jodie Holmes via motion capture technology.
The character of Holmes has a deadly imaginary friend as the game attempts to push the boundaries of the supernatural genre.
In an article from The Los Angeles Times, the actress explained what brought her to the video game project.
"It was David that did it. I was intrigued by the idea of doing something like this, but I didn't really understand what being in a video game meant," Page told The Los Angeles Times. "After talking with David, I was so moved and so intrigued by what Quantic Dream was doing, that I was completely on board. It was the combination of interactive game play and a story that was profound, emotional and subversive that inspired me."
Quantic Dreams has already brought us the media bending video game Heavy Rain on the PlayStation 3 Indigo Prophecy on the original Xbox. So we can only imagine what the studio will be able to do with Beyond: Two Souls and potentially its first next generation title Singularity for the PlayStation 4.
Yes it feels good to call the future system the PlayStation 4 instead of Orbis. The potential name change never sat well with gamers and would have been a misstep in the next generation of consoles wars. This is still just a rumor in till Sony official announces the new system, which is expected to happen very soon according to rumors that are currently circulating around the industry. You can read more about those here and about the PS4's potentially redesigned controller here.
