Most of us (save for a few lucky Californians) will have to wait until Jan. 15 before we get to make up our minds about DmC: Devil May Cry's younger Dante. Or, you could read the opinion of the staff over at Swedish game mag LEVEL.
The magazine is the first to get the review out for the game, and they've given it an impressive 9 out of 10. Similarly, Xbox Magazine UK gave it a 9/10, almost matching Gamemasters UK Review with an 89 out of 100.
If LEVEL's review is to be believed, the reboot boasts a great amount of variation in level design that sees Dante train dodging, exploring sewers, and borderline seamless blending when the levels go into Limbo mode, that serve the story while looking just plain impressive at the same time.
As far as the story, the review claims Ninja Theory's approach is more serious, and they've vastly improved on the control, claiming that game veterans will "feel at home." But Gamemasters claims the story "fades toward the end," and while it doesn't make "as heavy of an impact," it's still a "bloody fantastic action game."
A reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry is set in a parallel universe from the original Devil May Cry series. Set in Limbo City, a younger, non-silver haired Dante comes across "The Order," is a shadowy organization led by Dante's brother Vergil that has been fighting against Limbo's demons. During the events of the game, Dante learns of his true heritage, that of half-angel and half-demon, and is frequently taunted and stalked by the demon Mundus, the antagonisnt of the first Devil May Cry title.
Capcom recently announced DLC for the new game, titled Vergil's Downfall, which returns Dante's brother Vergil to the story. According to a press release from Capcom, "Vergil's Downfall offers fans the opportunity to play as one of the most wanted Devil May Cry characters, Vergil, in an all new storyline with fresh gameplay including new weapons, combos, enemies, and locations."
DmC: Devil May Cry is set to arrive on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Jan. 15, in North America and Europe, followed by a PC release shortly thereafter.
