Deron Williams played spectacularly scoring 28 points with nine assist, Joe Johnson added 21 points, and the Brooklyn Nets held off a late rally by The San Antonio Spurs in a 109-103 win on New Year's Eve.
For the Nets, the victory snaps a three game losing streak to the Spurs that date back to Feb. 2011 and marks their first win in San Antonio since 2002. The win runs Brooklyn's current winning streak under new coach P.J. Carlesimo to three.
The Nets started the game hot and took a 13-4 lead in the contest's opening minutes. Williams hit on his first four shots of the night and had three steals in the first quarter.
Tony Parker had 21 points and seven assists for the Spurs and Manu Ginobili added several key baskets as San Antonio rallied in the second half. Tim Duncan was big under the basket and had 12 rebounds to go alongside his 19 points.
After trailing by 14 at the end of the third quarter, the Spurs got to within single digits. San Antonio started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run when Ginobili hit a 3-pointer from the left corner and Parker intercepted a Williams pass that led to a Ginobili's second three of the quarter.
Ginobli scored 9 point in the last quarter and finished the game with 20 points, six rebounds and four assist.
After their 14-point lead was cut down in the fourth quarter, the Nets regained control when Johnson connected from long range on two consecutive possessions and reached the charity stripe on the next. Brooklyn was able to pull out their 17th victory of the season without power forward Kris Humphries, who was out with a mild abdominal strain.
The loss drops the Spur to 24-9 on the season and snaps their five game winning streak.
