Minecraft and Mojang's Very Merry Christmas

The holiday season has come and gone, and Minecraft is only getting stronger.

As of Christmas morning, the company celebrated an additional 453,000 purchases, according to a tweet from Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson.

The figure represents the game in all of its various versions, Xbox Live, PC, and the pocket edition. Add it all up, and the total amount of sales generated from all the different versions should be in the $18 million territory about now, though Mojang has yet to confirm it.

The company recently released an update for the Xbox 360 version, as well as the PC edition adding fireworks.

With over 4 million copies sold to date, Minecraft is currently the third most played online game on the Xbox 360, coming in after Halo and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The PC version still boasts the most players at about 8 million. The pocket edition comes in next, having hit the 5 million download mark earlier this month.

An open ended sandbox (literally) style game available for less than $30, it's not hard to see why so many people have latched onto the Minecraft phenomenon.

Players can join a multitude of different servers dedicated to various game mods, where they can work together as a team to build something amazing, or fiendishly destroy structures.

It's so successful that the game even has its own convention, Minecon, most recently held at Disneyland Paris. It also offers a slew of merchandise including shirts, scarves, magnets, sticky pads, and recently, even Legos. Mojang and company are even open to the idea of a movie or television show.
