In the main event of UFC 155, Junior dos Santos made his second defense of the UFC heavyweight title. His opponent was the man from whom he originally captured the heavyweight championship, Cain Velasquez.
Dos Santos came into the fight with 15-1 record and had won 10 straight, including all of his appearances inside of the UFC octagon. dos Santos has defeated three former heavy champions in his last three bouts including Shane Carwin, Cain Velasquez and Frank Mir.
Velasquez is 10-1 in his MMA career with his only defeat coming via a first round knockout to dos Santos back in 2011. Velasquez rebounded from his title loss by overwhelming Antonio "Big Foot" Silva via first round TKO.
Here is how the rematch pans out according to our simulation of it in UFC: Undisputed 3. With some added flare for entertainment value:
Round 1: Velasquez enters the ring first and the crowd welcomes him with a hearty grumble of praise. He appears to be composed, but in his eyes burns a fire of anxiety and anger. He jogs across the enclosed octagon and then stops and plants his feet to find his footing on the mat. He shakes and loosens his arms and a scowl of determination spreads across his face.
Next the champion dos Santos enters the cage and he is greeted with applauds and cheers of admiration. He moves to the center of the ring and lifts his right hand in a salute to the audience and then he brings it down swiftly in a chopping motion. The crowd roars in appreciation.
Finally the pre-fight charades are over and the opening bell sounds. Velasquez starts out the fight with a quick leg kick. dos Santos answers back with strikes of his own, while utilizing excellent head movement and misleading feints. Velasquez attempts a double-leg takedown with the ferocity of a grizzly bear, but dos Santos does a great job of avoiding the attempt. With two minutes remaining in the round, dos Santos lands a picturesque hook to the body and follows it up with a crisp uppercut that staggers Velasquez.
The former champion attempts to clinch as he recovers from the heavy-handed strikes of dos Santos, but the Brazilian displays incredible strength and technique by pushing him to the ground. Velasquez is able to quickly regain his footing and throws a couple of shots to keep dos Santos from advancing. Velasquez desperately goes for another takedown and is successful. From his opponent's guard he begins an offensive attack of ground and pound, but it is too late and the round comes to a close.
The crowd rises and gives a standing ovation to the two warring goliaths as they return to their respective corners.
Round 2: Velazquez enters the round determined to take the fight to the ground. The fighters entangle themselves in a clinch with each man landing effective shots to their opponent's midsection. Cain is trying to wear the champion down with some dirty boxing on the cage, but dos Santos able to tear away from the relentless challenger and lands a powerful strike that floors Velazquez. Dos Santos sits back and allows the former champion back to his feet.
The champion is gain confidence now and is forcing Velasquez to come forward and attack. He makes him pay for every attempted strike with powerful counter shots and the occasionally leg kick. Suddenly, dos Santos lands a savage powerful right, knocking Velazquez down on his back. He rushes in and begins a full on attack connecting with two powerful punches to the face of his opponent, forcing the referee to step in and end the fight. Junior dos Santos is victorious via TKO at 2:04 of the second round.
