Kevin Garnett has a live contract to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves next season but the problem is the 40-year-old all-star has yet to confirm he will be suiting up next season.
Despite the uncertainty, former coach Doc Rivers has been in touch with Garnett and made it clear that the center/forward will be indeed playing next season, NBC Sports reported.
Training camp starts in three weeks so Garnett could communicate with the Timberwolves in the coming weeks. Already in the twilight of his career, Garnett may no longer be the same dominant player he once was but is looked upon by the Timberwolves to continue mentoring Karl-Anthony Towns. Now a sophomore, many noticed the bond between Garnett and Towns and the same is expected to continue for the coming season.
But the real question now is what Garnett plans to do. Will he still play or make the same hard decision that Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan did?
Retirement possible?
If Garnett considers retirement, there is perhaps no better place to do it than in Minnesota. This is where his rise to stardom kicked off so it accounts for the perfect spot to call it quits.
Garnett was hardly noticed last season as he quietly works on Towns. His injuries have shown the past years, battle scars following years of play. Right now, there are no notable injuries to be worried about and the only thing to ask is his durability.
With the T-Wolves, Garnett is not likely to get lots of minutes. The focus is the young core composed of Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn. Could that be a point KG may be pondering on?
He could request a trade, something more of nostalgia. With rumors suggesting a Ray Allen return plus Paul Pierce still deciding on whether to play or not, seeing all of the together at Los Angeles Clippers could be a crazy idea.
With Doc Rivers still there, one last season could be a crazy idea. It may not be the wisest of moves but a classic gathering before KG, Pierce and Allen officially call it a career.
