Price of Memories: Collector Selling Entire Super Nintendo Library

You can't put a price on memories, but you can put a price on the collection of games that helped spawn them.

For redditor byuu, or as he's known on ebay, kaisetsuna, that price is just shy of $25,000. But that collection is extensive. The sale includes "all 721 games sold at retail in the United States, Canada and Mexico," all in perfect working order. Included in the sale are all of the games' boxes, most the of the original manuals, and a collection of Nintendo Power advertisement cards and posters.

Obviously, $26,000 is obviously a lot of money. By let's do some math. At this price, the buyer is getting each game for about $36 a pop. This is obviously asking a lot, considering some of these games that are hitting the 20 year mark.

Agree or disagree, it does make that sale for a sealed "yellow box" edition of Super Mario World look like borderline extortion, as if you didn't see that already.

SNES games were roughly the same cost as PS3 and Xbox 360 games are today. (provided you don't adjust for inflation) at about $60 each. So in terms of retail, before any tax, this collection would've been cost over $43,260 had you bought them new. In the end, not a bad chunk of savings really. There's even the potential to make money according to the seller, who notes that "For a reseller, this is an easy profit of $10,000 or more." Certain games offered in the collection like Super 3D Noah's Ark or Hagane can fetch several hundred dollars according to a SNES price guide at pricecharting.com.

Understandably, "Byuu" prefers pick-up, as sending some 700 odd video games halfway around the world is no doubt a shipping nightmare. But for anyone with $26,000 to spend on old video games, a drive to Ohio shouldn't mean much in terms of travel expenses. If you'd rather save yourself the drive, "will ship via freight at the buyer's expense. In all, this set comprises about four crates and 400lbs." Standard shipping from Fed Ex would add in about $1100 for sending that kind of weight though.

But buyer beware. Granted, you'll get gems like Super Mario RPG and Mega Man X, but you'll also wind up with stinkers like Shaq-Fu and Revolution X
