After several years and delays, "Avatar 2" has finally been confirmed for a holiday 2018 release. Not much is known about the hotly anticipated sequel until now when director James Cameron himself revealed that future sequels will focus on Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) new family.
For the first time, the critically-acclaimed director has shared the plot of not only the upcoming "Avatar 2," but also of the rest of the planned sequels. According to Cameron, who spoke to Variety, "Avatar" sequels will highlight the family saga.
"The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children," "Avatar 2" director James Cameron said. "It's more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans," he added.
According to SlashFilm, it has been previously rumored that "Avatar 2" will feature Jake and Neytiri getting married. He was rumored to be the new leader of the Na'vi. It was also said that the story will somehow follow the complications of having to battle humans, who threaten the Na'vis. These rumors turned out to be right after all.
Apart from this reveal, it was also confirmed that Stephen Lang, who played antagonist Colonel Miles Quaritch, will be back in "Avatar 2" to reprise his role. Although Col. Quatrich died in the previous movie, he is expected to make a comeback in some way and he will very much be part of the future releases.
As for the release date, "Avatar 2" is still scheduled to hit theaters in Christmas of 2018. However, there is still that possibility of moving the date again.
"We haven't moved that target yet, but we will if we need to," "Avatar 2" director Cameron said. "The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill on that promise."
