The first entry in the "Reclaimer Trilogy," 343 industries Halo 4 made $300 million in its opening week, marking a new record for the franchise. But 343 Industries isn't resting just yet. The studio is still working on new content for the video game and possibly the next game in the trilogy.
Halo 5 or the next Halo game is already in the early stages of development, according to development director Frank O'Connor.
In a recent interview with CVG, O'Connor discusses how the studio is preparing for the next Halo game and the future of the Spartan Ops mode.
"A lot of people at 343 are already prototyping ideas and software and art for future Halo products," O'Connor told CVG. "I can't say more than that, but work on the game started actually before we launched Halo 4 and continues apace as we cycle staff through the team's vacation breaks. We're excited about the next game."
Halo 4's executive producer Kiki Wolfkill said in a previous interview with CVG that the Halo universe could expand to different genres in the future.
"There are all sorts of stories we want to tell and the universe is so rich, right," Wolfkill said. "The first-person shooter is the best place to tell one kind of story but as you can see from Forward Unto Dawn and stuff like that, there are other parts of the story that are interesting to tell in different ways."
O'Connor does not specify that the next game is Halo 5, but Microsoft and 343 Industries have already said that Halo was the beginning of a new trilogy. According to the article, 343 Industries is still working on post launch content for Halo 4 and a major international Halo 4 tournament.
Halo 4' Spartan Ops mode has already released five episodes for the season with an additional five planned, but according to O'Connor a second season of Spartan Ops is still undecided and depends on how well the mode is received.
"Spartan Ops season 2 is yet to be decided, we're looking at how the first season does," said O'Connor.
"We got such great responses from [live-action web series] Forward Unto Dawn and Spartan Ops that we're pretty happy with it and we're learning a lot of really interesting stuff for the future," he added. "You are going to see a spectrum of Halo support though the next year and beyond."
