The news generated a lot of cancellation rumors, stating that the spinoff series may follow its predecessor. "The Vampire Diaries" was already announced to end after its eighth season. The same thing happened to the original series "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. It was reduced to 16 episodes after it was announced to end in season 8. Networks often reduced the episode count when the shows are not gaining many viewers.
