Colin Kaepernick threw a fourth-down 10-yard touchdown pass to his tight end Vernon Davis to give San Francisco the lead with only 11-seconds left in the game as the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Chicago Bears 23-20 on ESPN's "Monday Night Football."
The Niners opened the game with a 15-play, 79-yard drive that stalled on Chicago's two-yard line and resulted in a David Akers' field goal that gave the 49ers a 3-0 lead. Frank Gore had 47 rushing yards on the first drive and finished the game with 141 yards and a touchdown.
Starting for the injured Jay Cutler, Chicago backup quarterback Jason Campbell threw an interception on his first pass. San Francisco linebacker Patrick Willis, who had a big game with two interceptions, a sack and 11 tackles, picked off the ball.
Campbell completed 15 of 29 passes for 245 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Matt Forte finished with 102 yards rushing and a touchdown.
On the second drive, Kaepernick squeeze a pass to wide receiver Michael Crabtree on the left sideline, Crabtree slipped the tackle and ran into the endzone to give the 49ers 10-0 lead.
Kaepernick threw for 222 yards on 19 completions with two touchdowns - and benefited from the Niners' strong running game and some big catches from Davis and Crabtree.
The Bears were able to score three points after a long 12-play drive to make the game 10-3 going into the second quarter. After Chicago's defense held the 49ers to a quick three and out, Devin Hester returned the punt 54-yards to set up a Forte rushing touchdown.
On the opening drive of the third quarter, the Bears took 17-10 lead on a 25-yard touchdown reception by Brandon Marshall. The Bears defensive defended the pass well and contained the mobile Kaepernick for most of the game. Kaepernick finished with just 15 rushing yards.
The Bears had a chance to put the game away leading by four and driving the ball late in the fourth quarter, but Campbell threw his second interception against the swarming San Francisco defense that hit and flustered the quarterback all game long.
