2K Sports continues to build on the expected release of NBA 2K17 and the latest are the player ratings of several neophyte players. Among the ones whose stats were announced include Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and Ben Simmons.
Towns, Simmons get good ranks
After a good year, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves would be getting with a high rating of 88. After getting 78 on NBA 2K16, the 10 point addition is obviously well deserved.
Ben Simmons, the much-hyped rookie who will don the Philadelphia 76ers jersey for the coming season, curiously got a slightly similar rating to Towns with a 79. Though he has played in the Summer League, it will be interesting what basis 2K Sports had in giving him that grade.
Questionable player ratings?
While the two are content with their rating, Los Angeles Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell, Denzel Valentine and Spencer Dinwiddie didn’t get much of a change. Russell, who had a colorful rookie season wearing the purple and gold got a meager 2 point bump (from 77 to 79) on NBA 2K17 while Valentine was given a 73. Dinwiddie took a dip in his rating from 70 to 69. Understandably, the ratings come a bit of a disappoint to the players concerned but perhaps they should take it as a challenge to do better this coming season to gain a significant bump on the next version.

How did Joel Embiid get a 77?
Another Philadelphia 76ers is Joel Embiid who curiously got a rating. He has yet to play an NBA game so it seems odd how he got a 77.
Pretty good rating for a Twitter ninja #WeAllGotTheSameAmountOfPoints pic.twitter.com/q4Sxdqrq0n — Joel Embiid (@JoelEmbiid) August 25, 2016
The third overall pick of the 2014 NBA draft has spent more time on the sidelines thus far so many are asking how he ended up with a good rating despite not yet being seen on an NBA floor. There is word that he could play this coming season, so 2K Sports may have wild-guessed his rating.
But would that ploy be fair to others who have really played ball already for their respective teams? Air your take on the comments section below.
