Ubisoft Signs Tom Hardy to Play Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell Movie

Tom Hardy is adding another role to his nerd credits. Acclaimed studio Ubisoft has signed the actor to take on the role of veteran super spy Sam Fisher in the upcoming Splinter Cell movie.

A plot has yet to be officially released for the upcoming movie, but it wouldn't be hard to believe that it would follow the events of the first game, which saw Fisher searching for two agents in a former Soviet republic before soon uncovering a plot involving a nuclear device.

Audiences became familiar with Hardy what many consider his breakout role in Nolan's "Inception" before he gained mass notoriety, and brought new depth to the on-screen incarnation of the villain Bane in the closer to Nolan's Batman trilogy, "The Dark Knight Rises."

"Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skill," Ubisoft said of the signing. "His involvement in the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike."

While it may be difficult for gamers to hear Hardy take on the role of the super spy, as the gravel voice veteran actor Michael Ironside has been providing the vocals for Fisher in as many as six titles since the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell franchise debuted in 2002.

Hardy is also taking on the titular role in the new Mad Max movie, "Mad Max: Fury Road."

If you think Hardy doesn't have the acting chops to take on the role, make sure to watch the shades-of-Clockwork-Orange "Bronson," and you'll surely be convinced.

Ubisoft also confirmed the involvement of scriptwriter Eric Warren Singer, saying he "is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and we're confident he'll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans." Singer is probably best known for "The International" starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts.

Ubisoft is working with Paramount to co-develop "Splinter Cell," but hasn't offered much in the way of a release date for the movie, but I wouldn't be surprised if it came around the time of the release for the next game, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, due out this Spring.
