New York Times Prints MAJOR Spoiler for Grand Theft Auto 5

Only in very rare cases does traditional print media often cover stories about videogames. Specifically, cases where the game promises to be on of those tremendous sorts of titles right at launch, or that have caused a fair amount of controversy. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, a game will arrive with both of those traits and then some, and papers will pick up on that.

No game better exemplifies these examples than does Grand Theft Auto, and with the internet abuzz with every bit of info they can find on the new addition to the franchise, of course the New York Times would offer up a piece on it.

Combined with the facts that, traditionally, the word "SPOILERS" all in caps doesn't look too good in newsprint, and most videogame consumers not too big on getting their gaming news from the papers, the story slipped under the radar for a bit.

Earlier this month, the New York Times interviewed Rockstar's vice president of creativity, Dan Houser. In the interview, he let slip a major spoiler for Grand Theft Auto 5's story. For the sake of fair warning, spoilers, spoilers, SPOILERS.

"Just at the conceptual level, the idea was three separate stories that you play in one game. The next bit was, let's not have the stories intersect once or twice but have them completely interwoven." It felt like it was going to be a real narrative strength: you get to play the protagonist and the antagonist in the same story."

Yep. One of the three characters you switch back and forth between is also the game's main villain.

It definitely offers up an interesting potential plot twist to the story, and will have you questioning just which character will play the part of the betrayer; Michael, Franklin, or Trevor. I don't know about you, but my money's on Michael as the villain. Trevor's obviously got a screw loose (maybe even a few), but doesn't seem to have the smarts.

Rockstar released new trailer today offering up a better look at each of the three characters.

Grand Theft Auto V will release worldwide in the spring of 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.There is still no word on PC or Wii U editions of the game.
