Sony announced gave PlayStation Plus subscribers a reason to frown though the move was done with reason. This had to do with the upcoming price hikes for PlayStation Plus membership subscriptions that would affect US and Canada members.
Price hikes in September
The price increases for PlayStation Plus members was revealed through the official PlayStation Blog. Per the announcement, the annual subscriptions will now cost $59.99 (US) and $69.99 (CAD). This means that US subscribers will have to shell out an additional $10 while Canadian players face a $20 increase.
The price hikes will also cover the PS Plus members enrolled in the three-month plans. US subscribers will now be paying $24.99 while Canadian gamers will be charged $29.99.
The monthly rates will remain the same for US-based subscribers ($9.99) but Canadians will have to pay up $11.99. The price changes will take effect starting September 22.
It will be the first time that Sony will jack up the prices since the service debuted back in 2010. Sony explains that the reason behind the price hike is current market conditions and for them to be able to sustain the same high value to their members.
Turn off auto-renewal
With the impending price hikes for PS Plus members, there is no assurance that the fluctuated prices will sit well with all. Hence, current subscribers are advised by Sony to turn off the auto-renewal feature via their account settings before the price adjustments take effect on Sept. 22, IGN reported.
It remains to be seen if the same will hold true for the UK and Australian PS Plus members. Sony has yet to respond to queries on whether the two regions will also be affected.
At some point, Sony had to tweak the prices a bit after years of offering discounted deals. While the belief is that some PS Plus members could be rethinking their subscription, the price bump after 6 years doesn’t sound that bad, especially if gamers are content and happy with the service.
