Mass Effect 4 News: Next Entry Will Use Frostbite Engine

Bioware has announced that the next game in the Mass Effect series will use a version of DICE's Frostbite engine.

In a new post on the blog of Bioware's official site, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy said that the game will utilize "the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation. He also said that the game will be "enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building."

According to Roy, Bioware Montreal will develop the game and it wont be the first time that he team has worked on Mass Effect titles. The studios has contributed to the last two entries in the franchise.

"The Montreal studio has made significant contributions to the Mass Effect franchise," Roy said. "We started by building about half the cinematics for ME2, then most of its N7 missions, and finally we played an important role in the development of much of its post-release content. Then on ME3, we took charge of the multiplayer portion as well as making significant contributions to the single-player campaign. Most recently, we built a large piece of DLC that will be released on November 27 and that you know under the name of Omega."

Roy said that the in order to ensure an effective transition the Edmonton studio would continue to support the Montreal team during the game's development.

"Casey (Hudson) remains the Executive Producer, but he will have a Project Director under him, working in Montreal, leading our development team and making day-to-day decisions for the game," Roy said. "We all care very much about Mass Effect and make our decisions based on what's best for the game."

Roy didn't reveal too many details about the upcoming game in the blog entry, but did offer fans some reassurance that the game will still include "the pillars of the franchise."

"The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts," Roy said. "You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling."

Roy doesn't mention if the studio is using the Frostbite 2 engine or a new version by DICE. We will have to wait to more detail emerge. Have you seen the first female Turian yet?
