In the race to create better versions of their former selves, some gadgets find themselves falling off the bandwheel. Take the highly anticipated Canon 5D Mark IV, for example, which is currently rumored to possess a 4K video recording capability that yields underwhelming results.
According to No Film School, 4K video capture shouldn't be a problem, as long as the hardware supports it. In this case, the upcoming Canon 5D Mark IV seems to be lacking in terms of hardware, because its sensor is only 30MP, which means the device must crop to the middle 4,000 pixels or opt to pixel-bin to reduce the images to 4K resolution, all in real time. Of course, pixel-binning will lead to some quality issues, including moire and noise, and low light performance.
Canon 5D Mark IV will include a 4K codec present in the 1D X Mark II and 1D C, MJPEG 4:2:2 500Mbit/s, 8bit. There's also the capability to have Dual Pixel RAW, as Morning News USA reports. This means that the device can record a regular RAW file and Dual Pixel RAW file simultaneously. This enables users to edit the photographs via Canon’s Digital Photo Professional program, which features Image Micro Adjustment, Bokeh Shift and Ghosting Reduction.
The rumored specs of the Canon 5D Mark IV include Dual Pixel CMOS AF, 150,000-pixel RGB + IR photometry sensor, continuous shooting 7 frames per second, JPEG still image of 8MP from 4K video, 120fps HD video for slow motion (1080), USB3.0 terminal, HDMI terminal (unknown if 1080 or 4K via HDMI, likely 1080). It's also said to weigh a little less than 2 pounds, and has the dimensions of 150.7mm x 116.4mm x 75.9mm.
Canon users can look forward to more official announcements during the Beijing Conference on August 25, when Canon is slated to announce the arrival of the Canon 5D Mark IV.
