Capcom and Ninja Theory's upcoming hack and slash reboot DmC: Devil May Cry has a new trailer that features five minutes of gameplay and gives gamers some details about the game's protagonist Dante.
According to an official posting on Capcom's blog, the video shows off the "Home Truths" stage of DmC and it is very different from previous videos and trailers of the game. It features a return to the series' gothic style rather than the ethereal or surreal stages that Ninja Theory has shown so far.
The new game is set in a parallel universe from the games in the original series and tells the story of an alternate version of Dante and his live in the fictitious Limbo City. Dante's main antagonist will be Mundus, who is portrayed this time around as a rich-human.
In a interview at Comic Con NYC 2012 with GameZone, Capcom producers Motohide Eshiro and Alex Jones spoke about how the gameplay is driven by story elements and how Capcom gave Ninja Theory "free reign" to reboot the series.
"The angel and demon mechanic is tied into the storyline," Eshiro told GameZone. "They stem from Dante's half-demonic, half-angelic genetic make-up. It's always good when you can work something like that into gameplay as well and that was something Ninja Theory devised and we helped them refine. It allows you to explore two very different styles of gameplay. The different move sets and weapons speak to different sides of Dante's personality."
Jones said that Ninja Theory is skilled at cinematics at that in order to make the game more western focused the development team had to create a compelling narrative.
"Those guys have massive standard-setting skills at narrative and cutscenes," Jones told GameZone. The idea was to give them, more or less, free reign to let their skill run wild. That was part of the reason we settled on a rebirth. It gave Ninja Theory the ability to tell their own story within that world."
He went on to that, "in making the game more Western focused, narrative was a big part of that. Obviously if you're four or five sequels deep into something the story can get a little overgrown and present a barrier to entry for new people."
Capcom's DmC: Devil May Cry developed by Ninja Theory for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will be arriving late for PC gamers. The console version of Devil May Cry releases on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on January 15. Watch the "Home Truths" gameplay trailer below.
