With the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Activision has released a TV spot to explain the major changes that are coming to its Call of Duty Elite service. The service is not completely free and is a must download for gamers who plan to but the latest game in the series.
Elite is an online service created by Activision that offers lifetime statistics across multiple Call of Duty games as well as several social networking options. But gamers will still have to pay for all downloadable content such as multiplayer maps and expansions.
The services used to cost $49.99 per year and would provide Elite members with all of the downloadable content released within that year for free, but now the service is free and gamers can buy a Call of Duty Season Pass for Black Ops II that will net them all of the DLC or they can buy each DLC individual.
In an Email interview with Venturebeat, Activision Publishing chief executive, Eric Hirshberg said that the move came to be because the company felt that it would further unite and engage the game's community of players.
"What we have realized is that several of the Call of Duty Elite services which are currently only available to our premium members for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are things that would further unite, engage, and delight our player community. So we are going to make them free for Call of Duty: Black Ops II," Hirshberg said. "We've come to the conclusion that Elite has more value as a community-wide platform to drive engagement and connectivity than as a paid-members only service."
Call of Duty: Black Ops II is an upcoming first-person shooter video game, developed by Treyarch and published by Activision and has a release date of Nov.13, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows and on Nov. 18, in the USA and Nov. 30 in Europe.
