Whether it's TV, film, or video games, music truly plays an integral part in storytelling. Some artists gain popularity by having their tracks featured in pivotal scenes in TV series or films, while other soundtracks even go on to win awards. One that may well be on its way to recognition is that of 2K Games' "Mafia 3," which 100-song soundtrack has been unveiled.
"Mafia 3"'s 100-song soundtrack boasts of 60's tracks from various artists including the Grammy Award-winning Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Johnny Cash. Tracks by Beach Boys, Elvis, Ramones, and Sam Cooke are also featured.
"Mafia 3" will find players in the year 1968 and will follow protagonist and Vietnam veteran Lincoln Clay. The main character is tasked to plan a bank heist and later bring down the Black Mob. The game is set to be released on October 7 on PC, OS X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
According to Gamespot, the classic songs on the "Mafia 3" soundtrack will play in various pivotal scenes in the game, and at times will be "used strategically to support the story." More interestingly, the soundtrack also features licensed cover songs as well, given that the game's story is told via flashbacks from a current-day hearing that speaks of Lincoln Clay's 1968 adventures in New Bordeaux.
"Mafia 3" creative director Haden Blackman, a self-admitted music fan, sat down with Rolling Stone to reveal that it was truly their objective to create a solid soundtrack "because that will lead to an amazing game." He also admitted that he and his team were lucky because they were granted permission to use the songs by such iconic artists. Others, whether gaming or film or TV studios, have been unfortunate, or have encountered legal problems in doing so.
