Red Barrels, developers of a new first-person horror game Outlast has revealed details about its new game. Red Barrels was formed by ex-Ubisoft employees who had developed Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and Splinter Cell.
Outlast is based on Unreal Engine 3.
Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin shared his views on the new game with Eurogamer.
"The core experience is basically a stealth game," said Morin on the gameplay. "But instead of it turning into a shoot out when you get spotted by the enemy, it turns into a chase."
"You can't do rebounds and running and stuff like that, but we wanted the character to be able to interact with the world and use those abilities while they're running away from the enemies to make those chases as exciting as possible," Morin explained.
Outlast will be a linear game and will be separated by as Morin called them "puzzel hubs."
"You're going to have to explore and figure out what you need to do and in what order you need to do it, and while you're doing that there's going to be enemies doing their own stuff. They mostly become obstacles between you and your objective."
Outlast will be more realistic with very less weapons.
"We're still exploring the possibility of having weapons here and there, but it's going to be very minimal and definitely not part of the core experience... If players feel empowered then the stress - the fear - is not as high."
"Our main goal is to scare the s*** out of players," he said.
Red Barells are planning to keep players on tenter hooks while playing the game. If a player dies, the next time he enters as journalist, Mile Upshur, the scenarios will be mixed up, with the possibility of enemy placements changing based on the player's behavior.
Outlast seems like a fusion of Condemned, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and Assassin Creed.
Red Barrels are targeting for a Q3 2013 release with the present focus on PC launch.
