'Resident Evil 7' Lantern Demo Latest News, Release Date & Update: Masachika Kawata Spills on Mysterious Video Tapes, Severed Finger

There's definitely a lot of hype surrounding the highly anticipated "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard," and for good reason. The upcoming Capcom survival video game arriving this January seemingly goes back to its horror roots with its seventh iteration, which will land on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One first thing next year.

Two months ago, fans got a first look at "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" through the "Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour," which was released via PlayStation's Store for Plus subscribers, and since then has been downloaded more than 2 million times. During this year's Gamescom, Capcom again treated fans, this time to the "Resident Evil 7" Lantern Demo, which again features video tapes. Unlike the first demo, however, this one will be included as part of the final game and will serve as a flashback in the story.

According to Gamespot, these tapes will serve as playable "tangential sections" within "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard." Producer Masachika Kawata explained that these tapes are an avenue for gamers to experience the storyline from points of view of different characters, in order to fill in the gaps and to see the bigger picture.

"Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" Lantern Demo features the main character named Mia as she tries to play hide and seek from a strange woman who carries a lantern and screams profanities as she roams around a dilapidated house. Gamespot describes the villain as a woman "with the possessive intensity of a murderous mother."

Kawata admitted to Gamespot back in June that the studio is bringing back "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" back to its horror roots, and it seems they have managed to do this successfully, given the demos they have released fo far. While some may see it as a departure from the original "Resident Evil," Kawata encourages both new and old fans to see the upcoming game with a new approach.

One more thing that's unsettling with the "Resident Evil 7" Lantern Demo is the severed finger. Kawata admitted to Games Radar that he's amused with the reaction they got from that single sequence, but says that fans will have to wait and see to find out to whom that finger actually belongs.

"Resident Evil 7: Biohazard" is slated to land on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on January 24, 2017.
