The two imposing figures stare menacingly at each other. "Stone Cold" Steven Austin stands to the right and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to the left with neither man moving a muscle. They are as stiff as the statues of Greek gods. Each man is waiting for the optimal moment to seize the spotlight. Then the Brahma Bull charges the Rattle Snake and all hell breaks loose.
Beer drinking Rattle Snakes and soliloquy speaking Brahma bulls were the things that made the WWE's Attitude Era so great. Developer Yuke and publisher THQ have returned to this time period in professional wrestling with WWE '13 for the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360. The new game is out now in North America and will be released on Nov. 2, in the United Kingdom.
The early reviews are in and the reviews vary from excellent to good. According to IGN, the game has a "superb single-player experience, which should serve as the foundation for all future endeavors. If anything, the smart objective design and use of archival WWE footage makes us want more - and there's no turning back." IGN gives the game an 8.4-out-of-10.
The Official Xbox Magazine gives the game an 80/100 and says WWE '13 is good but it doesn't necessarily top last year's version of the game. The magazine says, "WWE '13 is another great match from Yuke's, but calling it better than WWE '12 is tough. If you're hoping to re-ignite a wrestling addiction, WWE '13 is a great gateway, but the organization's more ardent fans (like us) will enjoy this year's effort while still clinging to their copies of WWE '12 like an Anaconda Vice. "
Meanwhile Game Informer gives the game a 9-out-of-10, while claiming, "The Champ is here" and says, "WWE '13 offers a staggering amount of content. Its roster is unmatched, its creation suite is bigger and better than the already massive past offerings, online play is lag-free and matches the options and functionality of the best fighting games, and it offers two fantastic and expansive modes in Attitude Era and WWE Universe. After playing WWE '13, I'm hard pressed to think of a more enjoyable and complete wrestling game in history."
Games Radar says in its review that there is "too much nostalgia for newer fans," and that the "gameplay hasn't changed nearly enough" from previous editions. The site also says that it hopes "the gameplay is freshened up a little more next time."
Review aggregator site Metacritic currently have the Xbox 360 version with an 83 score based on five reviews. The PlayStation 3 version has no accumulated enough reviews to be scored at this time.
