Who would have thought, the long time fan of decorated Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps would stop his reign on the 2016 Rio Olympics? Joseph Schooling, 21, of Singapore won the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympics, beating another Olympic champion Michael Phelps.
What makes this event momentous is that, Joseph Schooling is a big fan of Michael Phelps and when he met the Olympian in 2008, Schooling was more inspired. By beating Phelps, schooling became the first Singaporean to bag the Olympic Gold in the history of the country.
In a surprising result, Phelps finished the race tying with two other contenders mainly South Africa's Chad le Clos and Hungary's Laszlo Cseh. The time is 51.14 seconds while, the time to beat made by schooling is 50.30 seconds. Phelps has since announced his retirement after the Olympics and has expressed his happiness over Schooling's win.
This is the first time that Michael Phelps was beaten in the 2016 Rio Olympics. His next shot on Gold is the men's 4x100m freestyle medley on Saturday. Schooling stopped Phelps' reign in the pool. The latter's silver award in the 2016 Rio, though you can't say a total loss, is so far the lowest award that Michael Phelps achieved in the Rio Olympics 2016.
Meanwhile, CNN reports, Katie Ledecky has just won her fourth medal in the 800m freestyle final. Ledecky made her debut in the 2012 London Olympics where she bagged the also attained the Gold medal. Ledecky follows the footsteps of Debbie Meyer as the second woman to dominate the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle in the Olympics.
