Lara Croft hung from a cliff, her hands grasping tightly to a rock as her legs dangled in the open water. She is at the mouth of a shadowy cave. The ground is covered with the remains of would be adventures. Lara pulls herself in and climbs through the darkness.
She contorts her body like a half-panther, half-lizard as she makes her way further onto the solid terrain of the cave. First she struggles onto all four of her limbs and then she muster up every ounce of her strength to settle into a crouched position. In one hand she wields a hunting knife and her in other hand a flare. She moves forward towards the darkness.
Square Enix released the final box art for the upcoming action-adventure platform video game Tomb Raider, a reboot and the first entry in a new Tomb Raider continuity.
"Tomb Raider's newly unveiled box art captures Lara in a defining moment," the company wrote on its Facebook page. "As she contemplates the long journey ahead, she knows she will be forced to overcome her darkest fears in an epic fight to survive."
Camilla Luddington is the new voice actress of the reimagined and grittier Lara Croft in the new video game. The game's creative director Noah Hughes said in an interview with Destructoid that the development team "wanted to create an emotional investment, to draw people into Lara and her point of view. We wanted to draw you in, make you care, put you in Lara's shoes and have this be an intense moment you were experiencing with Lara, not from an outsider looking in perspective."
The new cover art definitely shows a different Lara Croft than in previous games and appears to be inline with the game's plot. The official description of the game reads, "After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive." The new image absolutely conveys the survivor angle.
Tomb Raider will release on March 5, 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.
