David Akers kicked five field goals to help the San Francisco 49ers defeat the Seattle Seahawks 22-20 on NFL Network's "Thursday Night Football." The victory gives San Francisco sole possession of first place in the NFC West division.
San Francisco quarterback bounced back from his three-interception performance against the Giants last week. He protected the ball and finished 17 of 28 for 184 yards, while Mario Manningham had six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown.
But most importantly the 49ers got their running game going and got a big contribution from Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter. Gore had 20 carries for 93 yards rushing, while Hunter added 53 on six carries including an 18-yard run on a third-and-one from deep inside San Francisco territory.
The Seahawks fought hard to stay in the game, and made it difficult for the San Francisco 49ers. Seahawk receiver Sidney Rice gave the Seahawks the lead late in the third quarter when he caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson. The Seahawks went into the fourth quarter leading 17-16. Wilson finished 19 of 24 for 233 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch finished with 101 yards on 27 carries, becoming the second back first to rush for a 100 yards against the 49ers at home this season. Last week, Ahmad Bradshaw of the New York Giants rushed 116 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers.
Lynch started the game with a big run when he took the handoff, burst through the line and rushed towards daylight, and over 49ers' middle linebacker Patrick Willis, gaining 22 yards before Carlos Rogers tackled him from behind.
After the two team exchanged field goals in the fourth quarter, Alex smith lead the 49ers 60 yards down the field on 13 plays to set up David Akers for the game winning field goal. He knocked the 35-yard kick right through the upright and gave the Niners a 22-20 victory over Seattle.
