NBA 2K 13's first-week sales numbers experienced a 49 percent increase over previous recorder-holder NBA 2K11, according to 2K sports.
The game publisher has not released specific sales numbers, but has stated that NBA 2K13 is has developed a larger international following than previous edition, selling 66 percent more copies overseas than NBA 2K11.
"Our early sales figures are a validation of our ongoing efforts to push this franchise to new heights," says Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "We owe it to our great fans to continually improve our title - year in and year out - and that's exactly what we've done with NBA 2K13."
According to the statement released by 2K Sports, "Fans have flocked online to experience NBA 2K13 action with their friends, and the number of online users has more than doubled from last year's NBA 2K12. In addition, the number of played online games has also grown exponentially, as NBA 2K13 has experienced a 127 percent increase over last year's totals."
The game has also received critical acclaim, recently receiving a perfect 10/10 score from PlayStation: The Official Magazine, who said that the game's improvements "elevates 2K13 beyond mere annual greatness and into hall-of-fame consideration." The game features a soundtrack produced hip-hop mogul Jay-Z and gives fan a chance to play the ultimate showdown between arguably the two best basketball teams in USA Olympic history, the 1992 "Dream Team" and the 2012 USA Olympic basketball team.
NBA 2K13 also features the most sneaker brands ever and allows gamers the ability to create a nearly infinite amount of custom sneakers by adding layers and style combinations to the shoe.
NBA 2K13 is currently available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, Wii, and PC, with the Wii U version launching in North America on the same day as the system's launch on Nov.18, and in Europe on Nov. 30.
