The recently announced Darkstalkers Resurrection forthcoming arrival to PSN and XBLA is just the first step for famed Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono's hopes for a fourth Darkstalkers title.
Capcom producer Derek Neal told Joystiq, "Ono has a dream of revitalizing the Darkstalkers franchise, and this is the first step to get there...[Ono] wants Darkstalkers 4."
Neal claims that Capcom is using the release of Darkstalkers Resurrection as a litmus test to gauge audiences beyond the Darkstalker community for a fourth title.
It's been sometime since we've seen a Darkstalkers title, the last being Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, which released in 2004 for the PSP.
While the game included all the characters from prior installments of the series, as well as all of the endings and moves from the first three games: Darkstalkers, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge, and Darkstalkers 3, it failed to offer anything new.
As for a new Darkstalkers title, that will have to wait to be seen. But can you imagine a new Darkstalkers title with all the same photorealistic rendering and hand drawn style of Street Fighter IV? Throw in Morrigan and Felicia, and that's all I need to pick up another Capcom fighter.
Darkstalkers Resurrection will be available for download in early 2013 for $14.99 on PSN, or for 1200 MS Points on XBLA.
