Drew Brees set the NFL record for consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass on "Sunday Night Football," surpassing a stat that Johnny Unitas has held for 62 years, and the New Orleans Saints finally got their first win of the season with a 44- 35 victory over the San Diego Chargers at the Superdome.
Brees came out on top of a memorable quarterback duel with Phillip Rivers. The Saints and Chargers racked up a combined sum of 963 yards of total offense. Brees threw for 398 yards and three touchdowns, including a late third quarter score to Darren Sproles that put the Saints ahead for good.
Brees's record breaking scoring pass went for 12 yards to Marques Colston in the middle of the endzone on the Saints very first possession giving New Orleans a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The touchdown pass made it 48 games with at least one touchdown pass.
Rivers led the Chargers to 21 straight points after the Saints' score. He passed for 323 yards on 34 of 48 passing attempts with four touchdowns.
The half was indicative of the Saints' 0-4 start to the season. New Orleans' defensive unit was bleeding yards on the ground and in the air alike. Ryan Matthews rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown in the first half, including a 39-yard gallop into the endzone to put the Chargers up 21-16 going into the locker room.
In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Saints defense finally stepped-up and thwarted a Chargers scoring opportunity when Jabari Greer intercepted Rivers' underthrown pass for Antonio Gates near the New Orleans' goal line.
The turnover was a huge momentum shift for the Saints and Drew Brees, who went on to score 21 points in the third quarter to give a 37-21 point lead that the Saints never relinquished.
