The WWE is expected to bring back a plethora of special pay-per-views and programs and one that recently popped up is the “King of the Ring”.
Belief of such came following reports that the WWE has filed the trademark the “King of the Ring” name. The special event ran from 1985 to 2002 with Don Muraco being the first-ever winner.
The WWE held it once again in 2006 on WWE SmackDown before moving it to WWE Raw in 2008 and 2010. “King of the Ring” was held again last year with “King Barrett” winning it.
Past WWE “King of the Ring” winners
Below is a list of previous WWE “King of the Ring” winners alongside their respective years of reign via Wrestle View: Harley Race (1986), Randy Savage (1987), Ted DiBiase (1988), Tito Santana (1989), Bret Hart (1991, 1993), Owen Hart (1994), Mabel (1995), Steve Austin (1996), Triple H (1997), Ken Shamrock (1998), Billy Gunn (1999), Kurt Angle (2000), Edge (2001), Brock Lesnar (2002), Booker T (2006), William Regal (2008) and Sheamus (2010).
Springboard to Stardom
Following the WWE brand split, recalling “King of the Ring” could be one of plenty more events to come. The event could be a springboard for other stars left out of the major titles on both shows.
From the list above, there are big names in the list who at one point reigned as WWE champion. With new names trying to carve out their names, this could help in their push.
For “KOTR” winners, the only thing is that they have to change their persona a bit. Entering the ring with a crown and cape is the usual practice though it could help out stars who are pegged for a character change.
With this day and age that the WWE is in, there could be some enhancements needed once the event is made official.
