It was not the dastardly deeds of an evil mastermind that destroyed Paragon City. It was however the evilest of all creatures that finally ended the City of Heroes. It was the business decision by a faceless entity that ended the gaming world of superheroes and super villains.
The City of Heroes Team sent the following letter to the City of Heroes faithful:
"Although it is one of the toughest decisions we've had to make, we will close
City of Heroes on November 30, 2012, and conclude this wonderful chapter in our history.
We thank you for being with us every step of the way, for sharing our challenges, and for encouraging us to consistently improve City of Heroes. We couldn't have done it without you.
The development team enjoyed crafting City of Heroes into such a beloved game, and we hope you will focus on the good things you remember about playing rather than dwelling on the "how" and the "why" of this decision.
To honor City of Heroes and the impact it has had on its players and in our hearts, we plan on hosting several events. We'll share exact details and the timing of these events shortly, so please keep an eye out for further information posted in the City of Heroes forums.
If you have any questions about recurring billing and outstanding account balances, please visit our FAQ page."
The City of Heroes community did put forth a valiant effort to prevent the end, organizing on forums, Facebook pages and creating petitions to save the game. But it appears that NCsoft could not be swayed and the game servers will be shutdown as planned.
Cryptic Studios, the developers behind City of Heroes have at least organized several events for the community to participate in before the end of the game.
According to Rock Paper Shotgun, the events are as follows:
Summer Blockbuster - October 5 - October 8
Double XP - October 18 - October 22
Halloween Event - October 26 - October 29
Winter Event - November 9 - November 12
Rikti Invasion - November 23 - November 30
Live Server Shutdown - November 30 12:00 AM
There is also a City of Heroes FAQ page on the game's official site to help gamers out with information about refunds and other issues. It is sad to see the game end, but at least Cryptic Studios is giving the game a few last moment festivities. Comment below...
