Auctioneers at the SJ Corio company are auctioning off the remaining assets for 38 Studios, the bankrupt developer founded by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, according to an online listing.
The company has scheduled two events - one on Oct. 16 in Maryland and one on Oct. 23 in Rhode Island. The auctions list several assets including computers, printers, copiers, projectors, televisions and graphic design, and animation equipment.
The company's disintegration happened after 38 Studios released its very first game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning in February. The game was published by Electronic Arts and sold more than 1 million copies over the past three months.
The auction has one particular item of interest listed under the "Gaming consoles" category. The auction lists an "Xbox 360 XDK consoles" for its Oct. 16 auction in Maryland. Microsoft provides these kits to Xbox developers for the studios use while developing an Xbox 360 game.
According to Joystiq, Microsoft has issued the following statement: "Xbox 360 Development Kits (XDK) are the property of Microsoft and are only licensed to authorized studios and may not be assigned or sold to any third party without the written consent of Microsoft," the company told Joystiq in a prepared statement. "We will be contacting the appropriate parties involved in the auction of 38 Studios' assets to remove the XDK units from the auction listing and to secure the return of the consoles to Microsoft."
At the time of the studio's closing they were hard at work on Project Copernicus, a massive MMORPG set in the same universe as Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. The now-defunct 38 Studios would have launched the game as a free-to-play title.
