The Resident Evil franchise has moved past being just a survival horror title and has become an action game with horror elements. Gone are the days of low ammo and creepy police stations with strange puzzle. But Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi says the days could make a comeback if enough fans want a remake of Resident Evil 2.
In a recent interview with Gamespot, Hirabayashi said that Capcom is not currently working on HD remake of the 1998 survival horror game, but if the idea gains enough fan support, the project may be considered.
"Just to lay all the cards on the table, that way there's no rumor-mongering or things like that, no, we are not working on a Resident Evil 2 remake as of now," Hirabayashi said. "But if the fans really clamor for it; if there's a groundswell of support for remaking that game, then I think that's something Capcom would take under consideration."
In 2002, Capcom released an enhanced remake of Resident Evil, developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 for the Nintendo GameCube. The game featured a variety of new gameplay elements, environments and story details. The game is featured nearly photorealistic environments, all of which are pre-rendered.
The remake added defensive weapons including a dagger, which can be used by both playable characters. Each character has a defensive weapon exclusive to them. Jill Valentine uses a Taser, while Chris Redfield is able to shove stun grenades into the zombies' mouths to detonate them with a pistol shot.
The best thing added to the remake was new dialogue and the original live-action FMV segments were redone in CG, with the voice acting done by a new cast. This totally improved the tone of the game.
The GameCube received positive reviews and averages a 91-percent on the review aggregator website Metacritic. Hopefully the idea will gain enough fan support and become a reality.
